Dr. Stacy Ward

Dr. Stacy Ward is a 1999 graduate of North Carolina State University of College of Veterinary Medicine (although her undergraduate alma mater is UNC-Chapel Hill...Go Heels!). She was a member of the Phi Zeta Veterinary Honor society and graduated fifth in her class. She was the recipient of the Portia Milbrant Scholarship for Veterinary Geriatrics. Along with Dr. Jeff Ward she also completed an intensive 13 month internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University Of Tennessee College Of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville, TN. Veterinary interns are selected from the top graduates though a competitive selection process. Following completion of her internship, Dr. Ward practiced at two excellent multi-doctors small animal practice in Charlotte and Calabash, North Carolina. Dr. Ward has been a practicing veterinarian since 1999. Dr. Ward feels that it is extremely special to be a part of the local community as a veterinarian. Getting to know people and their pets is very personally rewarding. She was honored to be named Encore Magazine's 'Best Veterinarian' in 2007. Dr. Ward's special interests are internal medicine (especially endocrine disease), oncology, geriatrics, radiology, cardiology and the management of long term heart patients. Dr. Ward is excited to be a veterinarian for the Marine Mammal Stranding Team at UNCW and has an interest in the treatment and care of wildlife. She is the proud mother of Carly, Avery, and Emmitt as well as many pets. She is also a native of North Carolina and has been a summertime resident of Wrightsville Beach/Wilmington since she was 12 years old. The Wards have been living full time in Wilmington since 2003. They are members of Wrightsville Beach United Methodist Church.

Dr. Jeff Ward

Dr. Jeff Ward is a 1999 graduate of North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, the third top ranking veterinary school in the country. He was a member of the Phi Zeta Honor Society of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in the top 10% of his veterinary school class. Following graduation, Dr. Ward was honored to be selected for an academic internship in small animal medicine and surgery at University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. During this intensive 13 month training, he furthered his skills in the management of complex medical and surgical cases. Internship training is something that few general practitioners pursue. Following completion of his internship at University of Tennessee, Dr. Ward practiced for three years in a large, 24 hour hospital in Charlotte. Following relocation to Wilmington, Dr. Ward worked as an emergency clinician at Animal Emergency and Trauma Hospital of Wilmington prior to the opening of Wilmington Animal Healthcare in February 2006. Dr. Ward has a special interest in soft tissue surgery, emergency medicine and dentistry. Dr. Ward is a native of North Carolina and is thrilled to be living at the coast where he can participate in his favorite hobby, fly fishing. He also enjoys gardening, and dreams of building his own boat one day. He participates in wild turtle medicine and surgery whenever he gets the chance. Dr. Ward is also a novice ukulele player and frequently entertains his family and close friends with off and on key performances. Dr. Ward's human family includes wife Stacy, daughters Carly and Avery, and son Emmitt. His pet family is large and rambunctious with lots of furry friends.

Dr. Katie Horne

Dr. Katie Horne is a graduate of the University Of Florida College Of Veterinary Medicine, where she received her DVM degree in 2008. She graduated with Honors as a member of the Phi Zeta Veterinary Medicine Honor Society, and was ranked 11th in her class. Prior to that, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2004, where she was also a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society (Go HEELS!!). Dr. Horne grew up in Tennessee and North Carolina. Following graduation from veterinary school, Dr. Horne decided to begin her career as a general practitioner in the Wilmington area, where the rest of her immediate family currently resides. She enjoys all aspects of small animal practice, but has a particular interest in dermatology. She is so proud to be a part of the WAHC team and its commitment to excellence. Dr. Horne and her husband B.J., a special education teacher and athletic director at Topsail High School, were married after her first year of vet school. They are both so happy to finally be back home in North Carolina with their dogs, Birdie and Bogey, and cat, Dinah. In June of 2012, they welcomed their first child, a beautiful daughter named Bailey Grace. In November of 2015, Dr. Horne welcomed her very handsome son Judson!

Dr. Sara Lewis

Dr. Sara Lewis is a recent 2011 graduate of Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in Auburn, Alabama. She graduated with honors in the top ten percent of her class and was a member of Phi Zeta distinguished veterinary honor society. While in veterinary school, she was involved in numerous organizations and served on several missionary teams that traveled to Central and South America. She has special interests in critical care, dermatology, and soft tissue surgery. Dr. Lewis is originally from Birmingham, Alabama and the middle of five children. Her mother is a small animal veterinarian and helped to develop her love of veterinary medicine from early on. Sara attended undergraduate school at the University of Alabama (ROLL TIDE!) and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Biology and Spanish. She was married during her third year of veterinary school to her husband Jon, who is an officer in the United States Marine Corps. She relocated to North Carolina immediately after graduation and is excited to finally be living with her husband in the same state! Dr. Lewis is thrilled and proud to join the outstanding team at Wilmington Animal Healthcare where she can continue the ongoing tradition of quality, compassionate animal care. In her spare time, Dr. Lewis loves traveling with her husband, spending time at the beach, cooking (especially cake decorating!), and knitting. She also loves to dance and is a certified ZUMBA fitness instructor. She has a mixed breed dog named Bella  and a petite fiery bobtail cat named Miss Scarlett. Dr. Lewis welcomed a baby girl into her family in 2015!!

Dr. Katie Wagner Lewis

Although a native of Seattle, Washington, Dr. Katie Lewis spent most of her childhood in Cary, NC. She obtained her BS in Biology with minors in Math and Chemistry at Saint Mary’s of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN. She then went on to Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in the spring of 2004. Since then, she has practiced locally in the Wilmington area before becoming a part of the Wilmington Animal Healthcare team in August of 2012. In her spare time, she enjoys competing in the sport of triathlon, traveling, and spending time with family. Katie has a particular fondness for Boxers!

Dr. Kristin Paige        

Dr. Kristin Paige is a recent 2015 graduate of Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia.  She was ranked 9th in her class and graduated with honors as a member of the Phi Zeta Honor Society of Veterinary Medicine.  Although she enjoys all aspects of small animal medicine, she has a special interest in Internal Medicine and was a proud recipient of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Certificate of Clinical Excellence.  Originally from metropolitan New York, she is thrilled to live close to the beaches and warm weather of North Carolina.  Outside of work, Dr. Paige enjoys cooking, running and spending time with her husband Mark, who proudly serves in the U.S. Marine Corps.  Their two dogs, Madison the Yorkie and Mosley the mutt, also keep them busy!  Dr. Paige is excited and honored to join the tradition of outstanding care at Wilmington Animal Healthcare.


Dr. Nicholas Calo


Dr. Calo is a 2016 graduate of North Carolina State University- College of Veterinary Medicine, with a focus area in Small Animal and Exotic medicine. During his time at NC State he was involved in multiple groups- most notably being nominated as the President of the Emergency and Critical Care student sector. He has special interests in dermatology, surgery, critical care, and exotic animal medicine. While in veterinary school, Dr. Calo focused much of his extra time learning and working with exotic pets, and has surgical experience with both small mammals and reptiles. Although originally from Maryland, Dr. Calo moved to Wilmington in 2006 to attend UNC-Wilmington where he received a Bachelor’s in Science degree in Biology. He started his veterinary path in 2009 when he was hired at Wilmington Animal Healthcare as an assistant/ kennel attendant. In his free time he enjoys watching sports, reading, SCUBA diving, and spending time with his family. He supports the New England Patriots, Baltimore Orioles, and the Charlotte Hornets. He lives in the Ogden area with his wife Lora and daughter Violet. He also has a Yorkie named Kaya and an English Bulldog named Lucy.

Colleen is a California native who relocated to Wilmington in 2005. She enjoys living on the coast with her two dogs Latte and Petty #43, and her two cats Cheerio and Velcro (Crow). Colleen is an avid member of CrossFit Wilmington. In her free time she enjoys going to the beach, working out, and hanging out with friends. Colleen has been employed at Wilmington Animal Healthcare since 2006. She enjoys getting to know our clients and their pets, while striving to provide experience for our clients and fellow team members.

Linda grew up in sunny Florida, but spent the past 5 years in Seattle. Missing the warm weather and sunshine (and sweet tea!) she decided to move back to the east coast. Linda went to school at the University of Central Florida. She was a social worker for 3 years before deciding to pursue a job in the field of veterinary medicine. In her spare time Linda likes floating in the ocean as often as possible, watching movies, and game nights with friends. She has a dog named Olive, and a cat named Porch Cat. Linda has recently accepted the position as our Boarding & Daycare Manager.  Her caring and compassion for animals radiates from her!

Bonnie grew up in Sykesville, Maryland and moved to Wilmington in 2011. She graduated from Carroll Community College in 2015 with her associates of arts in general studies. She plans to go back to school to become a registered veterinary technician in 2017. She enjoys going to the beach, fishing, playing volleyball, and spending time with her loved ones (including her American bulldog, Bailee).


Diara was born and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina. She is currently attending Cape Fear Community College to pursue a career in nursing. She has two adorable fur babies named Tanner and Cali. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family, going to the beach, reading, and watching scary movies.


Katie is a Wilmington local, who's lived here for the majority of her life. She's currently a student at Cape Fear Community College, and hopes to become a trainer for the K9 police unit. When she has free time she likes going for runs at the loop, film photography, cooking, taking naps on the beach, and spending time outdoors with her two dogs, Hannah and Charley.


Jon is originally from Long Island, NY. He moved to Raleigh in 2004, and then relocated to the Hampstead area in order to be closer to his family. He has a dual degree in English Literature, and Acting from Muhlenberg College in Allentown,PA, and enjoys creating Spoken Word Poetry, and is currently working on his first novel. He likes to spend his free time playing video games, dabbling in free lance interior design, spending time with family and friends, and is currently obsessed with Zumba, and Poi Spinning. You will normally find Jon with a goofy smile on his face. He prefers to laugh his way through the day, and takes great joy in putting that same goofy smile on someone's face whenever possible.


Emma was born in Barrington, Rhode Island, but was raised right here in Wilmington. She is currently in school at Penn Foster to become a Registered Veterinary Technician and is on track to graduate by fall 2017. In her free time, she enjoys spending time at the beach, hanging out with her family, and snuggling on the sofa with her dog, Pork Chop!!




Leatitia is originally from Wilmington, Delaware and moved to Wilmington NC in June of 2016. Leatitia attended the University of Delaware where she obtained a BS in Environmental Science and dual minors in Biology and Geography. Leatitia also obtained her degree and license in Veterinary Technology from Delaware Technical Community College. In her free time, she likes to listen to music, go to the beach, watch soccer (Go Manchester United!), and spending time outdoors with her 4 year old pinscher mix named Harper.  



Allison received her degree and license in veterinary technology at Cedar Valley College in 2003. She especially enjoys patient monitoring and assisting in surgical procedures. She has worked in the veterinary field for over 12 years. She has two Shih-Tzu’s, Tosh a 6 year old spunky male, and Molly a 2 year old laid back lady. In her spare time she is a novice photographer, who enjoys shooting pictures of local favorite spots. You can see some of her latest work on display in our Doggie Condos!!


Julie moved to Wilmington in 2011- shorty after completing her BS in Criminal Justice from the University of Wisconsin - to be closer to her family. She obtained her degree in Veterinary Technology from Madison Area Technical College in 2003 and has had the pleasure of practicing in a variety of settings - a small animal hospital, a large urban human society and a 24-hour emergency hospital. She is excited to be part of the compassionate team of veterinary professionals at WAH that pride themselves on delivering the highest standards of veterinary medicine! Julie is a cat lover and currently lives with one feline companion, Yoda, a sweet and sassy 15 year old that she rescued at 8 weeks of age. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, live music, yoga, photography, being active outdoors and exploring her new home state.

Veterinary Assistants


Ashley is a Texas native, who moved to Wilmington in 2009. She graduated with a Bachelors in Business/Economics from Sam Houston State University. She currently has a Pomeranian named Oliver, a poodle/dachshund mix named Curly , and two cats Molly and Jordan. Ashley and her husband Bill welcomed their first child in October of 2015. In her spare time she enjoys playing with her baby girl, riding her bike, going to the beach, fishing, and sitting by a campfire on a warm summer night. She is an avid runner, and loves living and creating a healthy lifestyle for her family! She has the cutest southern accent!! In her spare time she is very crafty with used pallets and creates custom frames, storage bins, and whatever her customers request!!           



Melissa is originally from Wilmington, NC. She graduated from UNCW in December 2014, where she obtained her B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Anthropology. After graduating, she worked at a local Medicaid founded mental health facility and later worked at Duke University as a clinical trials assistant. Looking for a change and wanting to utilize her passion for animals, Melissa joined the team at Wilmington Animal Healthcare. Melissa has twin Terrier puppies, Lilly and Scrappy. They are the loves of her life!!! She enjoys walking on the beach with her puppies, spending time with friends and family, traveling, and eating Thai food!!!!  



Emily moved to Wilmington from Asheville in November 2015.  She is currently completing her certification to become a registered veterinary technician. Emily and her boyfriend Brandon have four dogs: a 
Pomeranian mix named Riley, a dachshund/corgi mix named Cocoa, an Anatolian Shepherd mix named Loki, and a Lab mix named Turk.  When not helping others they enjoy spending time with the dogs, 
strolling the beach, or exploring downtown.


Rebekah moved to Wilmington from Hatfield, PA in 2014. She graduated from Kutztown University, PA with a BS in Psychology and a minor in Biology. She loves exotic animals, photography, going to the beach, and spending time with her husband Nick, who is an officer in the marine corps. Rebekah and her husband have many animals at home, including Sydney ( a sweet and silly Cattle Dog Mix), 9 snakes, 1 tarantula, and many fish. Rebekah has a huge heart for animals and loves caring for them in any and all ways she can. She aspires to one day be a big cat keeper at a major zoo!!            


Jennifer has lived in Wilmington for the past 17 years. She is a UNCW alumni, and left a long time career in banking to pursue her passion for animals. She is currently going to school to become a Registered Veterinary Technician. She has a 9 year old lab mix named Wimbley and a 1 year old orange tabby cat named Watson.


Brooke is originally from Lenoir, NC and moved to Wilmington in 2015 after graduating college. She attended UNC-Chapel Hill as an undergraduate and earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology. She is passionate about helping people and animals. She has two adorable pet rats named Ralph and Nicodemus. In her spare time she enjoys relaxing with her pets and friends and will hopefully begin a new hobby of kayaking.


Kirsten came to us after an on and off again history in the animal field. After college Kirsten worked as an Intern for the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, FL. Most recently Kirsten put her animal skills to use working for a dolphin encounter company in Kailua Kona, HI. Living in Hawaii was a dream for Kirsten, but missing family has brought her back to the East Coast. Kirsten lives with her husband and two pets, Audrey and Leila. Kirsten loves crafting, including crochet and making jewelry. 



Melissa is originally from Charlotte, NC. She attended Central Piedmont Community College and acquired her dental assisting certificate. She worked in the human dentistry field for 1 year, then made the move to a veterinary specialty dental practice. She has 2 dogs named Dozer and May, both are sweet pitbull mix's. Melissa enjoys taking her dogs hiking, hanging out with her family, going to the beach, and exploring Wilmington.  


Ruthie is originally from Cranford, NJ, and recently relocated to Wilmington for a change of pace. Ruthie attended Kean University in NJ, where she obtained a Bachelors degree in Photography. Ruthie also has a certificate in a Veterinary Assistant Program from Animal Behavior College. Ruthie owns her own dog walking business in New Jersey. She has 4 dogs, 2 cats, a bunny, and a guinea pig. Ruthie enjoys photography (mostly pets and engagement sessions), dancing, going to the beach, and eating Mexican food.

auren is originally from Charlotte, North Carolina. She moved to the beach to attend UNCW where she is studying Film Studies! She enjoys  playing beach volleyball, making short films, and playing sports. She is an avid movie watcher and animal lover. She really enjoys taking care of our cat boarders. Lauren also volunteers with All 4 Cats, and helps foster feline friends that are waiting to find their forever home.

Hannah  is originally from Oriental, North Carolina. She moved to Wilmington in 2009 to attend UNCW, from which she is graduating with a B.S. in Applied Mathematics in May 2013. She was recently accepted into UNCW's graduate school where she will be pursuing a M.S. in Mathematics beginning in the Fall of 2013. Hannah enjoys going to the beach, swimming, and running. She has two sweet Pitbulls, Dola and Nike.

Rebecca has lived in Wilmington for the past 5 years pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Biology at UNCW with a minor in professional writing. Rebecca aspires to work with protecting endangered species as well as public education on the topics of animal behavior and conservation. In her spare time Rebecca enjoys gardening, reading, riding her bike around town, and relaxing in her hammock. 


Miranda is a senior at UNCW where she is majoring in music and minoring in psychology. She is a percussionist and has had many teaching opportunities such as writing an educational book for timpani with the applied facility member Dr. John Rack. She has taught drum lines and percussion at multiple high schools as well as community concert bands through UNCW. Miranda is originally from the Charlotte area of North Carolina. Back in Charlotte, Miranda has a 14 year old family pet dachshund named Jenny. She is currently involved with paws4people as a student handler of two service dogs. 


Allie grew up in Jacksonville, North Carolina and is the oldest of three girls. She is currently a student at UNCW studying Education in Young Children. She loves spending her time off at the beach, with her family, or with her amazing pets; the most adorable chiweenie Dillon and her sweet cat Danny. She loves music and can be caught dancing in the doggie daycare yard with the pups, it makes her so happy be a part of adding joy to all of our clients and their pets experiences at our hospital!!


Sara is originally from Charlotte, NC and moved to Wilmington in 2013 to attend UNCW.  She will graduate in December of 2016 with a degree in Biology.  Sara enjoys spending her free time volunteering with animals or just hanging out with her kitty cat, Nico.  She loves living near the beach here in Wilmington and enjoys the opportunity to go scuba diving any chance she is provided. Hoping to stay near the coast, Sara plans to apply to a Veterinarian Technology program in Florida to further her career with animals.
